Reglan®: Infants & Children

Not only are younger people at a higher risk of developing tardive dyskinesia from Reglan® use, but they may start exhibiting symptoms immediately following usage. Children and infants can develop tardive dyskinesia much quicker than adults and from less usage, even from just one dose.

Reglan® has been prescribed to relieve digestive discomfort for infants and children suffering from gastro esophageal reflux disease (GERD), which is when stomach content is pushed back up into the esophagus. It has also been used to relieve nausea and vomiting in young cancer patients receiving chemotherapy.

Another shocking usage of Reglan® occurred in hospital neonatal intensive care units given within a week of birth for premature infants having problems moving food from the stomach to the intestines. Apparently, the use of Reglan® to treat premature infants is a common practice in many hospitals. A surprising use of Reglan® is to increase milk production in nursing mothers. This particular usage can be extremely dangerous because it is affecting both the mother AND child as medication is expressed through breast milk. This means that both the mother and the infant could possibly develop tardive dyskinesia and have the disorder for life.

The symptoms of tardive dyskinesia in children are similar to that of an adult with tardive dyskinesia. Not only are the initial symptoms of tardive dyskinesia debilitating, but with children, tardive dyskinesia can cause further mental and behavioral damage because a child's brain is still developing.
