Uses of Reglan®
Why is Reglan® still being prescribed and used in the U.S. with such a prevalence of permanent damaging neurological disorders occurring? The medication is still being prescribed because after resurgence in tardive dyskinesia occurrences, a Federal Drug Administration (FDA) Black Box Warning was issued in 2009 essentially protecting manufacturers from the damage that Reglan® may cause to individuals. This allows manufacturers to continue to profit from a medication that may seem harmless to the uninformed and to those who don't notice the warning since after all, it is just an "acid reflux" medication.
People don't realize that everything that goes into their bodies has the potential to seriously harm them and it is not the responsibility of your doctor to inform you of all of the possible negative consequences of taking a drug. Even though Reglan® can still be sold, you are entitled to monetary compensation. 1-800-214-1600 for a FREE legal consultation.
The most common reasons for prescribing Reglan® are:
- Nausea and vomiting (post-operative and chemotherapy-induced)
- Stomach upset with gas
- Gastro esophageal reflux
- Delayed gastric emptying
The Black Box Warning Issued By The FDA States
WARNING: TARDIVE DYSKINESIA
Chronic treatment with metoclopramide can cause tardive dyskinesia, a serious
movement disorder that is often irreversible. The risk of developing tardive
dyskinesia increases with the duration of treatment and the total cumulative
dose. The elderly, especially elderly women, are most likely to develop this
condition.
Metoclopramide therapy should routinely be discontinued in patients who develop signs or symptoms of tardive dyskinesia. There is no known treatment for tardive dyskinesia; however, in some patients symptoms may lessen or resolve after metoclopramide treatment is stopped. Prolonged treatment (greater than 12 weeks) with metoclopramide should be avoided in all but rare cases where therapeutic benefit is thought to outweigh the risks to the patient of developing tardive dyskinesia.
Because Reglan® can take months or even years to manifest tardive dyskinesia symptoms in users, many people are often confused as to how they developed these strange involuntary movements. The fact that Reglan® is so readily prescribed for several uses makes taking the drug seem inconsequential and people do not realize that they could be permanently damaging their neurological system.
